Barleylands Craft Village

Barleylands Craft Village opens its doors for a special weekend of demonstrations and selected taster sessions on March 3 and 4^th from 10am till 5.00pm.

Just about every material will be represented during this exciting weekend, including metal, glass, wood, paper, clay and textiles when more than 20 crafters will show off their skills at this large thriving village set in the beautiful countryside of Barleylands, Barleylands Road, Billericay, Essex.

During the weekend you will be able to meet the crafters, commission something unique or get details of classes and courses available within the village where you can make your own special piece.

The selected taster sessions on offer start from just £4, while demonstrations and entry are free. It’s also free to park and you can enjoy a well earned refreshment at the on-site cafe. So with all this and more, be sure to head down to Barleyland’s Craft Village of the weekend 3rd and 4th March.

It’s preview time again and for 46, we have a killer issue lined up for you!

‘The Killing’ was award the ‘Best Selling’ DVD Box Set of 2011 and we believe that Sarah Lund’s inspiration knitwear must have played part to this! With inspiration drawn from this, and the Nordic region as a whole, issue 46 was borne.

Look out for designer Helene Magnusson, Harpa Jónsdóttir’s beautiful beret design, some fun (and functional) furniture feet, a fantastic selection of patterns by Bianca Boonstra, a yarn tour of Scandinavia, plus much more!

This one’s slightly different to yesterdays. The cables are different and it’s a tighter fit around the neck. Made in Sirdar Big Softie and I really didn’t want to take it off!

Notions
2 Balls Sirdar Big Softie, shade 344 Boho
10mm needles
Cable needle
2 buttons

Pattern
Cast on 26 stitches using long tail cast on and garter stitch 2 rows, slipping first stitch of each row.

Next row: Sl1, k4, p2, k12, p2, k5
2^nd & 4^th rows: sl1, p4, k2, p12, k2, p5
3^rd row: Sl1, k4, YO, p2tog, k12, p2tog, YO, k5

Commence pattern:

Row 1: sl1 C4f, p2, C8f, k4, p2, C4b, k1
Row 2 and all wrong side rows: sl1, p4, k2, p12, k2, p5
Rows 3 & 5: Sl1, k4, p2, k12, p2, k5
Row 7: Sl1, C4b, p2, k4, C8b, p2, C4f, k1
Rows 9 & 11: as rows 3 & 5
Row 12: as row 2

12 rows complete the pattern.

Continue until 5 pattern repeats have been completed, then repeat rows 1 – 11

Work 2 rows of garter stitch, slipping first stitch of each row.

Cast off.

Block and sew buttons into position – enjoy!

FREE PATTERN Pt .1 – Blue Sky Alpacas Bulky Neck Warmer

We were after cosy neck warmers in the office and Lesley, a (new – welcome to Lesley!) Knit Tech Editor, nominated her creative skills our way – the outcome - TWO (yes, two!) neck warmers. They’re too nice not to share with you on the Knit blog.

The first one is a bright and vibrant Blue Sky Alpacas yarn – the second (which will follow shortly) is with Sirdar’s Big Softie. Both are equally warm, cosy and fun to knit.

Grasshopper Neck Warmer

Notions
2 skeins Blue Sky Alpacas Bulky, shade 1212, Grasshopper
1 pair 12mm needles
Cable needle

Pattern starts
Cast on 20 stitches and work 2 rows of garter stitch.

Row 1: Sl1, k4, p1, k8, p1, k4, p1
Row 2 and all wrong side rows: sl1, p4, k1, p8, k1, p4, k1
Row 3: sl1, C4F, p1, k8, p1, C4B, p1
Row 5: sl1, k4, p1, C8F, p1, k4, p1
Row 7: as row 3
Row 9: as row 1

Continue until 9 pattern repeats have been completed then work rows 1- 6 one more time.

Next row: sl1, k2, YO, k2tog, p1, k8, p1, ssk, YO, k2, p1.
Next row: as row 2
Next row: purl

Cast off.

Finishing
Weave in ends, block and sew buttons into position.

There are some challenging designs, but they will look fabulous on your Christmas tree this year.
